Battery or...?

Only my 2nd post , but I'm jumping right in. Bought my '05 Wrangler X a little over a week ago. I'm on my 2nd round of "dead battery". I called the dealer and he is going to replace it, but it seems odd that it would be fine for a few days then gone?!

One other thing does puzzle me and I haven't been able to find an answer anywhere. When I insert the key, the radio or CD player comes on instantly, the moment the key is fully inserted, before I ever turn it! Any ideas?

Thanks, Phil

Sounds to me like something is amiss with the ignition switch. It's been a few years since I had that vintage jeep, but if I recall correctly, it's not supposed to do that. I suppose that could be causing a constant drain on your battery as well, but that's just a guess.

Is it aftermarket stuff? May have been wired up poorly from the install, and has a constant draw even when off. If it's all factory stuff, then I'd agree, look into the key switch.

Ignition works the same regardless of aftermarket accessories unless the ignition is modified.

Google: ignition actuator pin...do the symptoms sound the same? Also Makes sure alternator is charging with the new battery.

The radio is coming on because you are probably in the acc position not in the off position. The wipers & turn signals will also come on, I bet. The key should not come out in the acc position but when the key/key cylinder gets worn it allows the key to come out when it should not, possibly even in the on position.

The key works like this: starting all the way back… acc, off, on, start.

Go to www.jeep.com/jeepcares & under the owner’s tab there is a manuals section where you can download a manual (free). It is explained in there page 175 I think. Good info & good to have. You can also get a build sheet there by requesting one by e-mail.

Having it is the acc position can cause the battery to drain down which is probably what is causing the dead battery. Turning it to the “real” off position will most likely fix that but see if they won’t fix the key coming out when it should not.

Yikes...That would make sense! The key (see my other post) looks either work or filed down. Too smooth in my opinion. That would allow me to pull it in other postions than "OFF". It might also explain why I can go for a week just fine, then have a dead battery one day.

Thank You

Turn it one click up 'til the radio goes off & see if that solves the dead battery issue.

I slept well last night knowing the problem was found!! Thanks RUBI 4!! I can pull the key going down the road so, yeah, I can pull it out on Acces. too. If I lived closer I'd buy ya supper. Love this Forum.

Thanks, Phil
