Build your own control arms ?

Anyone ever done this ?
I priced the bar and joints (JJ's) and it seems like it would be cheaper.

Any opinions

Thanks

It is slightly cheaper. Generally only worth the difference if you are changing the suspension design to a mid or long arm setup. Generally not worth it for using OEM mounts on short arms.

I was going for front lowers with JJ's on both ends.
If that makes any difference.

I figured it to be about $100 cheaper.

maybe....the JJ's add up quick....barrel + adjustable forged end + weld in bung is the cheapest way to do double JJ's, single adjustable. if you do double adjustable with 2 bungs and 2 forged ends, the price goes up.

then add the cost of DOM tubing. if you get it for free due to work or whatever, then you're lucky. that stuff ain't cheap either

Don't forget the welding consumables.

Then factor in your time to do it. Then the question becomes what is your time worth?

You can buy them cheaper than making your own. I have gone down this road and bought all the materials to make my own MetalCloak adjustable arms.

Not including welding or paint, the ready to go arms from MC would've been $10 cheaper!

Totally only worth it if you are making custom length arms.

Just curious. What tubing are you using ? and your going with the Duroflex joints ?

So. This is my pricing that I used. I dont know what kinda tools equipment you have access too.

CE9113 x2 = $90 (1" shank JJ)
CE9113L X2 = $90

CE9113BL x2 = $44 (weld in bung and jam nut)
CE9113B x2 = $44

1 1/2" aluminum 6061 hex bar (same as MC uses) $45 (48" from eBay)

can get the hex and welding done at work for free.

Total of $315 for 4 lower control arms.

MC sells there alums for $615 for 4

Please advise if I am way off on this

you can't weld aluminum to steel bungs. if you use aluminum, you need to drill and tap the shaft, and you'd probably want to use 7075-T6 not 6061-O, if that's what you're looking up on Ebay.

if you're trying to make 4 arms, you're missing a bunch of joints. you need two joints for each arm.

I swear I read the bungs were aluminum too.

Now I feel like a dummy.
I used to be good at math. Guess not anymore.

Thanks for the input Unlimited, it is much appreciated.

I built lowers for my jeep. Stock length with 1.5" 1/4" wall DOM. I set off to build only the rears but got enough metal to do all 4. So for 36" of DOM and 2 sets of rod ends I paid 188 shipped. so by the time I get the ends for the front it will be about $300 so not much cheaper but I made them.
