can't thread compression tester into spark plug hole

Hello all,

I am trying to do a compression test on my 2002 TJ with the 4.0. My tester has three fittings sizes M10x1.00, M12x1.25 and M14x1.25. None of them will thread in. I did some research online and on this forum to find the thread size and the best I've been able to find is 14mm from the Oreilly auto parts website under specifications when I search for replacement plugs. Any information would help.

Do the tester and plug threads mate?

I'm not sure what you mean. The plug holes are visible and I can get the end of the tester up against the threads, but it won't thread. Just spins. I was able to get the plugs back in without a problem.

I think I found my problem. I bought this compression tester from Harbor Freight (go ahead and laugh). When I looked at the product reviews, I saw that others have had the same problem. Here's a copy/paste from one review:

Now two weeks later, I tried to use it, only to find that the collar on the 14mm head is oversized for testing in the recessed spark plug hole on my 2001 Ford Escape with DOHC Duratec engine.

Could this be the problem? If so, is there a compression tester that people recommend?
