Chain or Gear driven

So most people use whatever t-case comes with there jeep and don't think about swapping it unless they're doing full engine/tranny swaps and its a necessity.
So my question is for you guys that have been around and used all kinds. Do you have a preference over chain driven or gear driven t-cases? Do you notice the difference? Would you choose one or the other if compatibility wasnt an issue and you have the option?

Except that it's not. The NP231J is suitable for 8 cylinder motors and there are numerous upgrades available to it if reliability is a concern.

I wasn't saying they had to. I'm swapping out my 4.0 now and chose to keep and rebuild the Np231. I'm just saying that's a common time people consider it.

Chain is more quiet and plenty reliable

Gotta love D20 with power take off or the spicer 18 with dual levers and overdrive or PTO had them all and see no need for swapping in a 4.0
