Clicking when turning the steering wheel?

I get this clicking sound while driving and I turn the steering wheel. While stopped it also makes the sound. I had my son turn the wheel and it seems to be isolated somewhere in the steering column/box (not sure if this is the correct term). Any ideas? God I swear I'm turning into a Jeep 'hypo-chondriac', like I'm constantly paranoid something is wrong. Started with the wobbles that appear to be fixed. Thanks!

I'm kinda OCD about little noises and stuff that pop up as well...

Is it a squeak or a clunk? If a squeak, it could be the rubber isolator in the firewall that the steering shaft goes through. If it's a clunk, check the steering box on the frame for cracks around the welds. Also check that the track bar is TIGHT on the frame and axle end.

More like a click-click-click. Similar to a bad cv joint but in the steering column area...

Inspect under the hood where the steering shaft comes through the firewall. If not, have someone turn the wheel and listen at the gear box.

Ok so it sounds like it is coming from the area where the shaft comes through the firewall and the boot thingie appears a bit bunched...any ideas? Thanks...

Does it sound like it's comming from the steering wheel itself??? I recently had this problem in my 01. The steering wheel clicked when I turned it. Turns out it was the clock spring breaking in the steering wheel. That was pretty bad news. It took out my airbag and horn. No horn, no airbag and the airbag light is constantly on now. They're not cheap, and a bit of a hassle to replace. I haven't tried to fix mine yet.

If anyone reads this knowing a bit about it, let me know. The problem I'm running into is what clock spring to actually replace. 2001 6cyl sport, auto, NO CRUISE control.

I've gotten so many conflicing answers as to which clock spring I can replace it with. I'm only going to pull that wheel ONCE, and want to make sure it's done right the first time. Too expensive and too much of a hassle to mess this one up. I'm pretty tired of the airbag light one in the dash, (i really don't mind having a busted airbag) and I REALLY MISS HAVING A HORN!

Squirt it with a little bit of white lithium grease and see if it solves the issue.

No, no zerks.

If the noise continues, it could very well be in the steering column, like the turn signal mechanism.

Nope no zerk, just try spraying some whilte lithium grease at the steering shaft u-joint and where it comes out of the firewall, where it passes through the rubber boot. No, WD-40 is not a suitable substitute.

aslo do not use PBLaster, it will clean everything out and leave it dry
