Dana 35 overheating

I have a 1999 wrangler with a Dana 35 rear end how hot should it get runing on hway

Welcome to the forum. On longer trips, particularly at higher speeds, they can get pretty warm but usually not so hot you can't put your hand on it. Things that could cause it to get excessively hot would be low oil, new bearings (possibly too much preload) or a brake dragging. I would check the oil level first and make sure it's full to the bottom of the fill hole at a minimum. I actually jack the right rear up about 4" off of pavement and intentionally overfill mine, then install the plug before letting it back down. If you don't smell the brakes, they are probably not dragging.

I can lay my hands on it so I'm probely ok my front is a lot cooler is what had me worried

In 2wd, the front is coasting so it would naturally run cooler. Sounds like you are OK. Still wouldn't be a bad idea to check the levels in both.

The rear axle housing runs hot enough that you can't lay your hand on it more than a split second. The kind of heat that would make you pull your hand away quickly is nothing to the axle's housing and gears.
