You got to pull the fuse in the glovebox. The door plunger is looking to be depressed by the door to keep the light off....

Pull the fuse!

Not sure exactly how your '04 is set up, but here's how it goes in my '98:
Open the glove box, slide out the little retainer strap, and remove the glove box by tilting it further down, and away. No fasteners to remove. There is a little fuse box sitting right behind there. Find the fuse that says 'door sw defeat', or something along those lines. Pull it, problem solved.
Only catch is, on my '98, this also defeats the chime that sounds to remind you that you've left your headlights on when you open the door with the ignition off. So don't leave your lights on. I keep meaning to rig up a simple switch for the center console to keep me from having to pull the fuse, but I haven't yet.

Not sure if they are the same but on my YJ I pulled the wire off the back of the little plunger on each side
