Draining Transmission Fluid for Tcase Removal?

Just like the title says, do you have to drain the transmission to remove the transfer case? It's a pain pumping in fluid to the transmission!

Mostly but not true on some transmissions. My previous 32RH would dump ATF out its output shaft hole if the transfer case input shaft wasn't sealing it properly.
