Drive Shafts

Ok question: what is the differece on the 97-02 and the 03-06 rear drive shafts for an automatic because for some odd reason I can't find a rear drive shaft that fits a 97-02 that is for an automatic.

I've got a 2000 4.0L 3spd auto

There is no real difference in any of the rear driveshafts except for their length. What is wrong with your existing drive shaft?

oh nothing yet, just that they are orginal with a 145k miles on them and a machenic that I know said it might be a good idea to replace them before they give me problems down the road thats all

The driveshaft itself won't need replacing, only the u-joints on it which are <$20 each... there are two on your rear driveshaft. Spicer's 5-785x u-joint is a great upgrade that is also more durable for the stock Spicer 5-297 u-joint that the factory installed. A driveshaft repair shop or general garage... 4x4 shop too... can easily and inexpensively replace the u-joints for you.

Whoops brain fart.... correction to the driveshaft's u-joint part number... the correct Spicer driveshaft u-joint p/n is 5-785x.

I sent a note to the moderators asking to have my above post corrected...

Dang Jerry - - You are just a regular parts manual arent ya! Hell I can't even remember my phone number LOL.

Wolfbone...do yourself a favor that will last your whole life: Change your own u-joint. It's dang near impossible to screw up and it's just something a man needs to know how to do.

List of things all men need to know how to do: Sweat copper pipe, patch drywall, replace u-joints.... see it's right there on page four of the MAN handbook Oh yeah...page 12 - - use a gasoline soaked rag to start a diesel with a weak battery - - that one has to be in there somewhere.

Funny Dean and yes when I get ready to the u-joints I will do it myself and break a knuckle or two doing it
