Engine Overheating AFTER turning off motor

Coolant Temperature Sensor going bad?

I have had this occur twice since February. Most recent occurrence was two days ago.

The engine temperature gauge reads "OK" (just above 210F) while driving and then I stop, turn it off, hop out to do something like buy something in a convenience store, get in to restart the motor, the temperature gauge pegs out at 260F & the check engine light comes on & the Jeep won't start.

In each case, I've had to let it sit for 10 - 15 minutes until the temperature gauge decreases to near 210F before it will start again.

After getting it to restart, the temperature stays just above 210F like nothing ever happened.

Any thoughts? Replace the sensor at the thermostat housing?

2001 Sahara, 5 Speed Manual, 4.6 stroker motor, 4.5" lift, body lift, motor lift, flat skid plate, high-line fenders, lockers, but still running on 33's.

Yes, I'd try that first. Easy and cheap.
