Exclamation first gear gone

looking to possibly buy this.. opinions?

1998 4.0 5spd. 150,000 miles. doesnt have 1st gear. guy says its been gone for about 3 years. been driving it without it. just starting in 2nd i guess. doesn't off road it, def a street queen. only mod done to it is a set of rubicon wheels and tires. other than that, bone stock sahara package. everything is good on it, seems really nice, just doesnt have 1st gear. big deal to replace or what am i looking at here? rebuild the tranny or entirely new one? how does this work. still trying to get into the jeep scene but it seems like every jeep i look at (thats reasonably within my price range) has an issue or story behind it. is this a huge red flag or just a minor bump in the road ? as always, thanks for the responses in advance.

figured it was worth mentioning, i asked the guy about what it did when you tried to put it in 1st gear. it will physically go into gear, and act as if it is in neutral and then pop back into neutral like there was never a gear there. said all other gears worked fine and has been driving it like that for the last 3 years.

Where do you live? I bought a 1998, 5spd, 42,000 miles last spring, $8200, clean & straight, taken care of. I would recommend you keep looking. With the Jeep you just looked at has 1st out for three years, what else has been ignored for the past 12 years? When was the transmission fluid last changed, if ever?

exactly....if he was too ignorant, or maybe couldnt afford to repair the tranny, then what else did he neglect about the jeep??

i live in Charleston, SC. military put me here. problem here is that its a beach town, (folly beach, james island, island of palms, 2 hours south of myrtle beach, etc.) and every tom, dick, and harry wants a jeep to drive around the beach scene with. keeps the price fairly crazy down here. The guy i was talking to was askin 3500 for it obo. i figured 3k in cash bought it, and then i figured i could afford a bit of money in the trans. maybe not though. just wanted some insight here. i dont want to spend more than 5k because i dont "NEED" a jeep, i just want one to bum around in.

i understand that, and it was my first thought, but after talkin to this guy he lives downtown, he said everything was mechanically fine except 1st gear. he doesnt wheel it, just commutes a few miles there and back. i know when i had my F250 back home, i never used 1st unless i was off road somewhere... i guess i didnt see his story to be that far "out in left field". is there any option he would have had other than replacing the entire trans?

3k seems like a decent price. I'd start at 2500 though

I wonder if it's just a minor thing - like the shifter is hitting the floor or console and won't go in quite far enough? Did he have the console out and didn't put it back correctly? Look under the boot.

Ask around and check E-bay. Every once in a while you see a 5 speed offered for around, or less than $500. Some people convert to automatics and no longer need their 5 speed.

You said you have a tops of $5000, and you might get this for 3000, that leaves you $2000 to fix the trans. If everything else is OK, I'd jump on it.
