Fluid change on automatic

Hey friends,
I just changed the transmission fluid in my 2001 TJ sport- but only about 3 quarts came out. (So I only put about 3 back in). Did I miss something? I thought 6 quarts should've come out. I changed the filter but didn't see anything about the O-ring. I just took the old one out and put the new one in.
Did I leave have the old fluid in there somewhere? Thanks- I appreciate your help to such a newbie.

The missing amounts of ATF reside in the torque converter, cooler lines, and transmission cooler inside the radiator. The only way to change all of the ATF is to flush it while the engine and transmission ATF pump is running.

I just recently changed mine and it took 6 quarts to get it at the right level. How could that be?

Either it was low on ATF or you did not check the ATF level correctly per the Owner's Manual and it is now overfilled.

So, you have a three speed automatic, I'm thinking.

Total fluid, including torque converter, according to the ARRC site, is 17.5 pints. Expect about half to remain in the torque converter and not drain out. You may have been down some as well.
Was there an O ring with the new filter? Should have been with it if needed.
