Front speakers that actually ROCK!

Sooo I got a pile of stuff in the mail today.. 5 1/4 dash pods from Select increments and Polk db5252 components.... 5 1/4 woofers, tweeters, and crossovers...
I had some decent pioneer 4" coax in the factory (7 speaker system) pods and had previously been happy with them until I put polk db6502's in the factory sound bar/pods and the fronts basically disappeared.... I was very impressed w the polks so time to make the front match

There really isn't much to say about the install.... I put 1/8x1/4" foam tape around the woofers... poked the wires through the included polyfill and out of the pods... then screwed them into the pods.... Select increments includes speaker plug adapters with spade connectors to plug right into the jeep and speakers... I sniped off the spades and hooked them to my new crossovers along w the speaker leads.... Then a shot of silicone into and around the grommets...

Here's a pic of old and new

Waiting for silicone to skin over.. will add more once they're back in the jeep but quick test with only one hooked up was very impressive

I'm blown away!. The difference is just amazing.... the stock head unit now has more than enough power... all the way up is too loud and full treble is too much.. with the bass at 1/2 or a little more, treble at 3/4 or a little more and volume at 1/2 I can now hear better clearer and louder than cranked all the way up with the stock in the sound bar and pioneers in the dash.. I'll never have another jeep without these speakers....
Still working on hiding tweeters.. more tomorrow

Just ordered those pods myself. Where did you mount the tweeters and crossovers?

Haven't mounted them yet but will update tomorrow once I get em done.... they'll be hidden from sight.... a stock appearance is very important to me so as not to attract thieves.

Getting closer... after lots of thought I decided to silicone the tweets to the windshield frame below the gap between the dash and windshield.... it cost me just a little treble but they still sound great and are not visible.

Pics after silicone sets up so I can remove the tape holding them

Will most likely just ziptie the crossovers under the dash

Well crap.... silicone is taking too long.... I retaped such that I can put it back together and leave the tape in place....
I ended up pulling the dash back for access.. only takes a couple minutes.... 4 nuts on top, 2 nuts behind glovebox, and 3 torx on each side.... I didn't unplug anything... just supported it from the footman loop at the top of the windshield and pulled it back a couple inches.

Great minds think alike. I have these same component fronts (my adapter brackets are sheetmetal) and a kicker sub on the way from crutchfield right now. I had ordered them before I saw this thread, so I am glad you are happy with yours.

Re: tweeter placement.... the absolute best would be to drill the hole and flush mount them in the top of the dash but I'd keel over dead before making holes in the dash lol... next would be surface mounting on the dash but i demanded hidden.. I had hoped to put them down with tje woofers but lost too much sound quality.... I experimented with behind dash vents inside the ducts and while sound was good the annoyance of losing sound quality because my passenger got cold and shut the vent ruled that out...

My chosen location muddies the vocals a little but with tje 6502's over my head vocals are more than strong and the fronts tweets reinforce stereo imaging which lacked a little with the narrow spread of the overhead pods

As a system it works amazingly well... if you only do the front then keep your tweets up on top of the dash and move em around to find the sweet spot that bounces the best sound off the glass to your seated position

It was a bit of a job to get em flush mounted w the factory grills but here's the 6502's....

If you just want to screw em in without grinding on the speaker flange go w the 5252's here too.

These pics are under steering column w knee plate removed and pass side w glove box removed
You can just see the edge of the crossover... I put double side tape on it, stuck it to the duct and then ziptied it because we all know double side tape can be unreliable...

Tweet finished location.... these pics were a PITA to get but you can see that the front of the tweet is wide open and the back is just barely shrouded by the dash pad.

I used them on my motorcycle due to VERY limited space in the factory speaker locations and they do seem to help some.. you can always upgrade later if you want without much trouble.

Something occured to me that I felt should be mentioned here....

Some folks may not know that the crossovers will only allow midrange to the woofers and highs to the tweets.... a seperate subwoofer will be required for bass.

Edit: did some testing and the crossover isn't the limiting factor on the lows... probably the lack of air space more than anything

the ones you have will go down to 50 hz, while not ground shaking low, that is still well into the bass range.

I agree that a sub would be better if you want deep bass.

I'd like to hear those speakers hooked up to an amp. Polk does a great job of utilizing minimum power input, but they really come to life when pushing the designed rms wattage.

Yeah I know the speakers are rated to 50 htz.... i also know what they sound like.... they have great mid range and the tweets give me beautiful highs but if you run this setup without some sort of a sub you won't get a lot of lows.... I'm happy with them as they are.... I just didn't want anyone to be disappointed if they bought em looking for some thump.... it's possible that with the limited air space of the pods that more power might help the bass quite a bit too as long as you can dial back the highs enough.... I did a little testing this morning w the sub amp fuse pulled.... bypassingthe crossover didn't net any more bass and the 6.5's in the factory overhead pods have a lot more than the 5 1/4's in the front

I did consider a 5 channel amp but it really isn't needed.... if anything I'd like to have more sound control than just the bass and treble sliders.... I may look into other mopar factory head units to see if there is anything w a digital eq and still has cd changer controls for my bluetooth module.

Well I have to eat my words a little.... I had unplugged the sub and listened to them before but I forgot to turn the bass up on the stereo..... tried it again and the lows are a bit better... DOH!

The 6.5's have quite a bit more..... probably more so because their pods have more air space than because of their size.

I might be wrong, but in my experience placing the tweeters (high range) that low will produce undesirable sound imaging (muffling).

Can anyone confirm this?

I played with all possible locations.... i didn't like em there which sucked because I had really hoped to put them down low.... the top outer corners of the dash facing straight up or angled slightly toward the windshield gave the best imaging and sound quality bit was too visible for me.... my chosen location dulled the sound just a little but was still better than down low
IMHO of course

Fwiw I spent over 4 hours moving the tweeters around to multiple locations and listening to the same 3 songs again and again

Portugal the man: Feel it still
Chainsmokers: Something just like this
Disturbed: The sound of silence

All chosen to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of my speakers.

Keep in mind I also have tweeters in my sound bar but I tested with the fader in all positions including all the way to the front.

There are two versions of the dash pods. Early-TJ and Late-TJ. The early TJ's have a larger support bar that intrudes into the speaker opening.

The two versions are actually the same pods, just with different speaker adapter pigtails for early or late tj

The metal bracket on the early tj gets trimmed to fit tge pods.... very minor

I have the same front Pods for 5 1/4, mounted my tweeters flush in the pillar trim a few inches above the dash (the trim does get pushed out due to lack of depth, but still looks good). More than enough high end. Yes you can see them, but other than that, the system is invisible.
I have the 6 1/2s in the rear pods, and the 6 3/4 Kicker sub in the console. The key in a jeep is sealed enclosures, and POWER.
I initially ran just the front and rear speakers off of a high powered head unit...it was disappointing. I installed the sub then powered the system with a 75x4 and 500x1 5 channel amp and BAM - the whole thing woke up and sounds...dare I say, excellent!
