gas tank skid split in TWO !!

hey guys....noticed this morning a piece on metal hanging down in the back......probably was putting up some nice sparks as it was scraping across the tar at 55 mph........well it was part of my gas tank skid plate split in two...

anyone replace theirs with an aftermarket skid and still have the factory one kicking around ????? or any suggestions ??? thanks...

99 wrangler TJ (with a slightly less than functional gas tank skid)

My suggestion would be to get an aftermarket...the factory one obviously isn't up to the standards it should be.

oh, and post pics, or it didn't happen

there are several aftermarket skid plates that bolt on over the oem skid, but if yours is split and dragging i would remove the old skid.

mine did the same thing. started out just rusted what i thought was a little but took it offroad and ripped almost the whole thing off, had to get creative with some rope, bungies, and duct tape to hold the gas tank in for the ride home. watch out, that skid is the only thing holding your gas tank in. theres 2 straps that basically hold the top of the tank to the skid to keep it from bouncing around but the tank really just sits on the skid. if the bottom of the skid is gone theres nothing holding the gas tank in except the fuel lines and the fill line. the earlier tank skids were bad but the later ones were ok. i put a 2003(i think) on mine and its actually fairly thick. got it for 50$ on ebay. aftermarket will run you 200-350 depending what you get.

The plates that hold the gas tank up in place can't be considered a skidplate on older TJs. The first several years of TJs that came out used a very thin piece of sheet metal to support the gas tank and did not offer any protection at all. It wasn't until 2000 or so that Jeep finally started installing a heavier piece of steel back there to support the gas tank that can be considered a skidplate that is sufficent for most needs.

I would replace it with a used replacement and then protect it with a true gas gank skidplate that bolts on over the OE gas tank support.

When you have a choice, buy American.
