Hard to start tj wrangler

Hey guys I have a wrangler that when I go to crank her up to start it takes 5-10 seconds sometimes longer for the engines to fire and start. That seems a lot of cranking to me. It has a 4.0 engine. I can shut the engine off run in and out of a store 5 minutes and same thing. Is this an electrical problem, gas or something else? Any suggestions?

My dads Grand Cherokee did that, just before the CPS went out.....could be the problem.

Just a habit I have developed over the years, but I always turn key to "on" and let it beep 3 times before I hit the starter, if I jump in it and go directly to start, it will wind a little if its cold, it has always done it, 11 years and 115k

Mine kind of does the same, sometimes it fires right up other it slowly does maybe 3-4 seconds, I think I'll try the key turning thing that may be the answer. I had starter issues earlier this month though.

Most likely it is your fuel anti drain back valve that took a dump. Next time try turning the key on off 2 - 3 times before starting the engine. If it starts right away, then you know it is that valve. You will have to drop your gas tank to replace it.

same thing happens to me... all i do is pump the gas peddle about 3 times and does not take so long

I had the same problem with mine this winter it's the anti dran back valve for sure mine starts up right away now

What is the correct name for this part? I cant seem to find it.

I have an 05 TJ that did the same thing a few weeks ago. An injector was leaking and caused the pressure to release so replaced and all was good. Did it again and the fuel pump was going bad so I replaced it and all is really good so far?

Get your O2 sensor checked. That was the culprit for the same cranking problem on my 97.

Before you go spending $ check the fuel pressure. If it's not holding pressure then it will have to re-prime every time you start it[ hence long crank times]

I had the same problem with my 97 TJ 4 cylinder. I would turn the key on and pause for a few seconds twice to get it to start. I started getting an error code 11, Intermittent loss of crankshaft or camshaft sensor. The camshaft sensor on the 1997 TJ is in the distributor. Got a rebuilt distributor with a lifetime guarantee for $50 from O'Reilly's. Did a complete tune up; new cap, rotor, wires & plugs. No more check engine light, starts right up and runs 100% better.
