What do you mean by left rear gears?

Are you sure you just didn't break the left rear axle shaft?

If it's just a broken axle it's a pretty easy fix for a home mechanic.

I was told if it was axle wouldn't be able to drive it? It makes a loud grinding clanking sound at left wheel happened first in 4 low. but since then all the time. I figured it best to just replace the whole back end?

Look for a used rear axle on craigslist. D35s are cheap and plentiful. Swap won't take more than 1/2 day.

Only thing at the wheel is the shaft and the bearings, as well as brakes.

However, a Dana 35 axle and 35" tires is asking for broken parts.

you can drive with a busted axle.

BTW: the best way to not get screwed is to do due diligence before buying something.

Surprised your gastank is bad, they are plastic and 03 and on the have a heavy duty skid plate around the tank. I actually just upgraded to one in my 00TJ, 115 was better then 270 for the wheeling I do. Look into your tank and what's wrong a little more. Remember Craigslist is your best/worst enemy, you can get really good used parts along with really bad so get in touch with a local jeep clup, this site is a good place to start and see if someone can help you along.
