A it a four cylinder? If so I'm sure it's a Dana 35

Your rear axle is a Dana 35 and front is a Dana 30 most likely. You can also tell by the shape. I have attached a photo that you can use to figure it out.

I am in the same boat. I've been casually looking for 44s for a while. A lot of threads on here will say search Craig's list / junk yards / eBay for used tj 44s and eventually you will run across a decently priced rear or set. I've found a few that were in the 1000-1200 range but I need them with 4.56 gears with the 33s I just put on it. I could always just go to east coast gear supply or g2 axle and buy one or both with the right gears and a locker that just bolts on, but I just can't get my head wrapped around spending that kind of money at 2500-3000 per.

They say the front Dana 30 is not too bad even if you regear and put a locker in it. So I may just swap the rear out with a Dana 44 and just regear and put a selectable locker on the front.

To specifically answer your question though.....I'm pretty sure any tj wrangler (97-06) that a 44 comes out of will basically bolt right on to your 98.

Your fine with the D30 up front. For the rear you have 3 options...

A... Look for a D44
B... Do an 8.8 swap
C... Do a super 35.

I replaced my Dana 35 with a Ford 8.8 using the Artec truss system. Awesome upgrade and I love it, I even left the trac-loc in it and it powers me up the rocks with a simple few clicks of the e-brake. For my front Dana 30 I had an Artec truss welded on and c-gussets then replaced my stock axles with chromoly ones. I also have an Aussie locker up front. All in all I have a fully capable and strong system, with only one upgrade possible in the future which would be a rear locker. Oh, btw, the rear disc brakes are a nice upgrade with my 8.8 conversion too.
