Losing Coolant

I was losing coolant due to it coming from the weep hole in the water pump (just checking the reservoir level and was was always losing water). So i replaced the water pump and thermostat thinking that should be it. Still losing water. Next I found that the radiator had a leak, so I replaced the radiator, cap, and the hoses, again thinking that should take care of it. Still losing water. So at his point I've got it in my head that it's a bad head gasket, so I take it in have the gasket replaced, the head gets pressure checked and machined and i also have the rods, rocker and lifters replaced while he's in there. Now I'm confident, should be fixed, right? ...No, still losing water! Anyone have anything similar or any ideas!? This is driving me nuts! I should mention that I've mostly just been checking the reservoir and it's always lower than the last time I checked it. Also it's a 2000 sport 4.0. I'm trying to make an appointment this week to get the block tested I guess, it's the only thing left that I can think of. Any ideas would be great, thanks!

Heater works fine, no noticeable coolant smell or leaks that I can tell

Check out a loaner pressure tester from a parts store. Hands down the best way to find a leak. (Where I live, Advance Auto has the best ones.)

I'm not super mechanical, I can do small things though. What's the difficulty level on doing this myself?

The average fifth-grader could do it.

The tester is just a pump (with a gauge) that attaches like a radiator cap. You pump it up and listen/look for leaks.

Is it overheating any and what does the temp gauge read at normal operating temp? Wow, that's alot of repairs chasing coolant loss. Are all those engine repairs deemed needed by the shop even though it didn't fix the issue?

No it never overheated since I've owned it, I tried to stay on top of keeping the coolant filled. Before the most recent repairs it was running at about 200 after the repairs it only hits the first hash mark. Most of it I did myself. The water pump was obviously shot, so I decided I'd just do the thermostat at the same time. And the radiator had a leak in it, so I replaced hoses at he same time. I guess I just kind of assumed it was the head gasket after that, the head was warped about 3 mils I think he said (or 3 thous?). When he got the head off it was pretty rough inside, a lot of "Jelling" so I asked him to replace the parts that needed it. The guy that worked on it is one of my friends so I know he wouldn't do me dirty. In fact I got a great deal on the work.

If you have a 2000 4.0 loosing coolant that you cannot figure where it went you should be very very very sure oil level not rising

The 2000 head design tended to crack and was redesigned because of this issue

The crack tends to let coolant into crankcase contaminating oil and make it not lubricate properly leading to MAJOR engine damage

If you have even a hint of increasing oil level stop running the engine drain oil into glass container and both inspect if for milky chocolate color and let it sit and look for water separation
at bottom

Ignore this warning at your expense

The head was pressure tested when the head gasket was replaced. I will check the oil as soon as I get home though

Yea but only if you knew where oil level was before


Read about tupy heads

There is even a wicki on AMC straight six engines

Ok I just got home and checked the oil. Everything looks normal. Not milky, no bubbles. Level looks good.

If it was me I would do an oil change and let the old oil sit in clear glass bottles for a couple days to see if anything settles out but looks somewhat reassuring

How much if any unaccounted for coolant have you lost and at what rate are you loosing it currently?

So I just checked the radiator too and it was full. About a half inch left in the reservoir. I'd say I've went through one jug of 50/50 in about 5-6 weeks. I also checked the oil cap, it was also clean.

I had a coolant leak that only became apparent when the system hit 16lbs.. The spec on the cap (2.5L) is 18lbs. I could smell the coolant, but didn't see it cause it was on the high side and came out as steam.. I threw some dye in the system and found it.

I have the same problem. I will be replacing the thermostat this weekend.
I see coolant, but no drips. I think it only comes out when it hits the highway

Pull out your overflow tank, dump the coolant and then look for sludge build up in the bottom that could be creating resistance during the overflow. You mentioned having a clogged heater core. Odds are that the same crud is in your block and overflow tank. Coolant backs up to rad neck then squirts onto top of rad then evaporates. You'll never see it. Flush the entire system.

The reservoir is clean. The system was flushed when the head gasket was replaced about a month ago. My heater core is good, haven't had any issues there.
