Mechanical fan storage

I'm putting my 98 2.5L back together, after a rebuild. I get to the part of the FSM discussing the mechanical fan:

Well crap. When I removed the fan assembly (2-3 months ago) I stored it laying flat.

Has anyone experienced this lubricant contamination, as described in the FSM? I was considering replacing the clutch just to be safe -- but then I wonder how the heck they could ship the part to me, anyway. I've never seen a shipping company pay any attention to the "this side up" stickers.

Is there any way I can check mine for contamination?

Thanks!

They ship them without problem because they don't lay flat in the wrong position for an extended period of time. About all you can do is reinstall it and see if the clutch still works ok.

I think the key word is "could". I would run it unless you experience a problem with it.
