Muffler questions

So when i bought my TJ, the muffler was pretty thrashed and the tail pipe was rusted out so I cut it after the cat. Well a few months later and I'm getting pretty sick of my NASCAR, but I'm on a very tight budget. So I'm wondering if I were to buy a $30 dollar Thrush muffler and throw it on and then dump it down right after, would this reduce the sound a decent amount until I can purchase a tail pipe? Would the lack of the tail pipe reduce the sound reduction? Thanks

You will still get a pretty good drone with the pipe pointing down.youll need to at least route the pipe to the outside of the vehicle if it's out the side in front of the rear tire or all the way back to the rear.with pipe pointing down you will get the sound bouncing off the ground witch will still get a huge drone.i ran my pipes with a dump down on an old camero I had and it was terrible.hope this helps!

So if it were to come out in front of the rear tire, I should see a good reduction in sound compared to just having the cat?

You also won't have to worry about smelling exhaust with the pipe exiting to the outside of the vehicle because it's not trapped under the rug at stop lights etc.

I have a thrush welded on my lj dumped right after muffler, its really not all that loud. With the hardtop on I don't notice any drone at all but topless it was pretty horrendous and I've never noticed any exhaust smell.

I had a turn down after the muffler for a couple days before I could get the Jeep in the shop for a custom tailpipe. To put it mildly, it sucked. It probably didn't help I didn't have any carpet in the back because the turn caused the whole rear tub to resonate. Basically tuns the whole thing into a giant subwoofer.

Plus all the heat under the vehicle, it really needs to exit to the side or the rear of the vehicle.
