Mysterious hardtop leak, help!

Hi all,

Long story short... had some heavy rain for a few days. Went in the back of my TJ and it was like i had had the top off! Standing water everywhere!

I searched it on here, and after 5 attempts at stopping the pouring leaks, over a few weeks, I have succeeded...

However....
Whilst the actual dripping leaks have stopped, I noticed today that the right hand seal between the hardtop and tub is wet.

I am 100% sure the water is not getting there from the corner of the hardtop door, and the rain was coming straight down (no wind) so it was not able to track up under the edge of the hardtop...

Pics attached to show where the seal is damp. It is wet from the edge of the door to the 2nd attachment bolt, half way down the tub. (See red line, incase I'm not clear)

I have looked closely all over the place, and the only idea I have of how the water is still getting inside is from this hole in the outside of the hardtop. (See pic).

Its an oem hardtop, and the hole is meant to be there, there is one on the other side.

Could this be where water is getting in?

If so, can I block up the hole? Or does it have a purpose?

Any ideas would be much appreciated. This is getting frustrating!

Thank you.

FarmerTom.

Is it possible the water is coming in around the rear windshield, or maybe even one of the door seals and just running along the top of the tub/bottom of the hardtop?

Hey Rev_Don, thanks for the reply.

Yes, I'm sure it is not getting in around the hardtop door corner. I have siliconed it up completely, even made a small ledge on the top of the tub...

I have siliconed up that hole and the join in the hardtop anyway. I don't think it has a purpose, i guess its just a join of the different bits that make up the hardtop itself. I will report back after it rains next with an update.

But if anyone else has any theories or first hand experience, please let me know.

Thank you...

It's a jeep, it's ok. Just make sure the drain holes are open.

Check the plastic "ledge"just above the doors. Mine was falling off and it was letting water in. Water has a way of findings the smallest cracks....

Had this happen to me over the last week or two. The water was finding its way under the hardtop in between the seal and making its way up the screw holes. I originally tightened the screws first, but didn't want to over tighten them.

I ended up going to my local big-box hardware store and purchased some camper shell weatherstripping. M-D Building Products 1-1/4 in. x 30 ft. Camper Seal Foam Tape-02352 - The Home Depot

Simply unbolted the top and wedged 2 blocks of wood (one at each corner) raising the top off the body. Clean both surfaces of dirt/dust/water. The sticky side should be tacky enough to hold onto the original seal. Set the roof back on the bed and poke holes (from the bottom up) with a nail to get a starting point for your hardtop screws. Tighten down until firm. Hope this helps.
