Need help identifying my Transfer case so I know which parts to get.

I have a 2002 TJ Wrangler X 4.0, Auto Transmission. Transfer case is NP 231 J. I am hearing it might have a 1" chain or a 1.25" chain. How do I find out before I break it down? I was told there is no way to know until I get into it. Is that true? I was planning for this to be a weekend project. Not a break it down, order parts, wait for parts, put it all back together project.

I don't know the chain width, but the 2001 parts manual only specifies one chain part number (4338 935) for the NP231, no matter what engine or transmission is in the Jeep.

I've never been in there to replace one.

From factory all the TJ 231 had the narrow chain but some owners have upgraded to wide chain and sprockets from a 231DHD found in Dodge Durango

Sorry no way to tell from outside if internal parts were upgraded but it is not a common mod

Thank you. I will order parts with the plan of the 1" chain.
