Need help with noise from below

Hey all,
I recently have been hearing a noise from my 1999 Wrangler (4 cyl, Manual Transmission) and I can't seem to figure out where it is coming from. I took it to a shop (not jeep dealership or anything specific) and they said that I need a new transfer case because there are metal pieces in the fluid and it messed it all up on the inside. I looked up on other forums and found that it is normal to find small metal pieces in the fluid. Is this true?

Also, the noise that the jeep is making only happens when it is in motion. NOT when it is idling or not moving. I can be in neutral while coasting and still hear the noise, or I can be in any gear and hear the noise. I can even feel the grinding while I hold the stick-shift. So this lead me to believe that it may not be the transfer case...unless the transfer case is engaged when I'm in 2H? I rarely drive in 4WD because I don't do any hardcore off-roading. From my knowledge, the transfer case is used for 4WD capabilities. But since this is a jeep, they can be a little different than other trucks. If you guys have any other suggestions to what may be causing the problem or things I should try then please let me know. I'm new to this forum so please help me out!
