new guy with some questions on a steering box

Hey fellas just picked up an 03 wrangler x manual trans and I have so far put on a 4in lift with 33 federal mud tires and have been searching all over for little diy and junk yard mods and came accross the Durango steering box mod but some say it won't work on the 03s and others say it will so since I'm at a supposed change year what all will work with the 03 wrangler will the zj tie rod still work and the Durango steering box and junkyard alternator from the newer durangos and will the neon wiper switch still work sorry for the long post tried searching a lot to find the answer myself but no luck since everyone who seemed to be doing these were on older tjs thanks in advance and am loving the jeep

Sorry, I'm a JK guy and just wanted to stop by and say hi. Also, I'm moving your thread to the TJ tech section, I think you'll get better help there.

In the mean time, I just like to say . . .

I don't think the Durango steering gear is an "upgrade" necessarily, but maybe for someone it is. The ZJ tie rod stuff will work on 97-06, and I don't know anything about a wiper switch. Good luck though!

How is it bot an upgrade from what I have read it's larger with bigger internals and if you get one that was ment for a plow thennit has ports so you can run a hydraulic winch or hydraulic assist steering

It doesn't have a different gear size than stock so there are the same turns L-L, I don't have any call for a hydraulic winch or Hydro-assist steering as I'm only running 31" tires now and only intend to go up to 33". I don't think there's a benefit to be had for 33" tires as the stock gear will turn them without too much heat in the first place. Again though, we can both see it different and still be right.

The TJ's steering box mounting bolt pattern changed in 2003 for the new Mercedes steering box. That means the Durango steering box won't bolt up, at least not without cutting one of the frame's mounting bolt holes out and welding it into the right position to match the Durango box's mounting bolt pattern.

Not to mention I wouldn't bother changing the steering box for only 33's.

Thanks for the info it wasn't going to be for just the extra power for now but just the piece of mind for when and if I go to a larger tire and also the supposed better steering ratio
