Noise from front diff

I took my 97 Sport in for a squealing I thought might be ujoints or a wheel bearing. They threw it on the lift and the mechanic tells me I have more wrong than that. He said there is an issue in the front diff as well.
When he spun the tire, the drive shaft rotated and there is a thunka thunka sound as it rotates. I canít hear or feel anything when driving but he said it could go at any time. I just parked it for now but got to thinking. I have a Power Trax lock right locker in front. Might that be causing the noise when itís off the ground? I didnít think to tell him I had it so hoping thatís it before I drop money into it.

IMO best thing you can do is open the cover to inspect the front diff. A lunchbox locker shouldn't make any noise unless you are turning, then it would be a slight clicking noise.

Thanks. The clicking iím aware of of course. I canít get underneath anymore to check stuff. Knee and back issues. I may just take it elsewhere for a second opinion. Wouldnít you think Iíd hear that noise or feel something amiss when driving though?

Differential is fine fortunately, just needed a fluid change. Itís the locker on its way out. Still drives fine and sheís still functioning so we sealed her up and back on the road again.

Squealing is commonly caused by one of the two u-joints in the CV at the tcase-end of the front driveshaft. It's commonly called "angry sparrows". I'd check that out asap since if that CV joint goes it can seize/bind which will take the entire tcase out with it in a dramatic fashion. As in breaking the tcase in half. Literally.

For the time being I'd remove the front driveshaft and once out, check its CV joint.

Thanks Jerry. The u-joints are fine wheel bearings all good. Theyíre still trying to track down the squeak/squeal though. Apparently it only shows up when the vehicle is in motion. Iíll pick it up tomorrow and see if they found it.

I have posted about a high-pitched squeal I'm trying to track down. Good luck, hope you figure it out. I think mine is the rear pinion bearings but they haven't shown themselves yet.

Somewhere someplace is some metal on metal squeaking. It canít be found in the shop. All the critical stuff checks out okay. I guess itís just a Jeep thing. lol

My 8.8 squeal wound up being a carrier bearing race. I tore it all apart this weekend to inspect everything. The race did not look or feel bad at all. It did have an odd pattern on it. With a magnifying glass you could see tiny pits and the beginning of the radial choppy marks that happen when a bearing goes bad. It would seem the race was not fully seated and was sitting a little cocked. I replaced everything but axle bearings and now the squeal is gone.
