O2 sensor question

I have a 171 and 172 error code which means I need an new O2 sensor. But my question is which one? The top or bottom? When I take it off, what should I look for to see if it's bad? Covered in carbon? Or something else? Side question: which brand is the best? Bosch Or Denso?

That's the Upstream 02 sensor which is mounted just below the exhaust header. The Downstream 02 sensor mounted in the catalytic converter is ok, don't bother replacing it.

Go with an NTK 02 sensor and avoid Bosch 02 sensors which don't work well in Jeeps. I'd use a Denso in my Toyota or wife's Lexus but I'd stick with an NTK for the Jeep.
When you have a choice, buy American.
