Odd Electrical issue - need help

This morning I went start the jeep (2005 LJ 4.0) and there was ZERO power. Not even the lights would come on.

When I opened the hood, I noticed the under-hood light had fallen loose of it's mount so my first guess is that since it drained the battery due to the internal switch going to the on position.

I put the jumper cables on to the other car and lights / power came back. I held the ignition in the start position for two or three seconds and got the typical click click click click from the starter, which of course means - still not enough power, but then everything just went out. No lights, no anything, even with the jumper cables still hooked to the other car.

I am stumped, because even if the battery is in fact low, why would I have no power at all at this point even when hooked up with jumpers to a running vehicle?

Any thoughts would be helpful!

Thanks,

Justin

Check all the fuses and relays in that circuit.

What specific circuit? There is no power to anything.

Make sure both battery cables are clean and tight at both ends
Next check where cable enters terminal for battery post it can corrode thru the copper strands to the point that you have an positional intermittent connection
Finally check ground connections to body tub at firewall

Had snow today filling the driveway. I will start to dig into this a bit more tomorrow. I cleaned the battery terminals not too long ago but did just re-check it. I also was able to get to the ground on the engine block and cleaned them also today. It was snowing so I wasn't going under the jeep to check the wires at the starter.

I am pretty sure it's not a bad ground at this point since I was getting power until about a handful of clicks on the starter while connected to jumper cables then it went dead. I am thinking it might be some type of fuse or soemthing, unless the starter is grounding out. I might just change it since it's pretty rusty looking anyway!

Let it charge longer. If you can plug a battery charger into it for the night then you know you have a good battery to start troubleshooting with.

Problem resolved - Battery was so dead. I left the jumper cables on for a while to another car. Turned right over.
