If this has been covered before I can't find by searching.
The rear of TJ has a slight sag which I believe is common. Not a problem for my typical use. I do get a little rub now and then on the trail but I'm running 35's and no mod to rear well.
But what if I run fully loaded down for a multi day trip, like maybe the Rubicon?
I'm on 4" lift with OME springs and RE shocks. No body lift.
Do I need to mod the rear with metalcloak or other? Are there any air adjustable shocks that are recommended?
I believe my springs are good.
slight sag ='s, what an inch?
you could go up an inch on the rear springs, or some pucks for less.
you can opt to relieve/cut the rear quarters, trimming the wells and raising the flares.
or purchase new corners and/or trimmed armor panels and install them.
or add a body lift.
but air shocks set to carry a heavy load will ride like bricks..... have you thought about air bags? they fit inside the springs and can be inflated to dif pressures to aid in carrying extra weight or no weight........
Yeah, maybe an inch or so. I don't think any more than 2 at most.
My plan has been to trim, but I've been real hesitant to do it.
And it hasn't come to the point that I needed to. Not yet.
I was thinking/looking at air bags. But I wonder how they affect extension of the rear springs?? If bags are a decent option, I will probably lean towards them.
Rear springs are cheap. Way cheaper than airbags. Spacers in the rear would help too. My opinion, I'd add a small body lift. Should solve all you problems. I have no issues in the rear with 35s, 4" springs, 1.25" body lift.
Honestly, I've been wanting to avoid a body lift. If I do go that route, I'd want as small as possible. I've just never liked BL's. Probably more mental than anything. I've seen bad things with tall BL's when younger. HAHA
I was even wondering if I just replaced my body bushings with new stock height, maybe that'd help. Probably not though.
Why? I used to have a bad attitude towards body lifts as well but TJ's are made for them. Cheap, easy to do, and WAY better than adding the extra height in springs. Do a motor mount lift at the same time and you may not even have to adjust linkages.
Thanks all.
I agree I need more clearance.
I changed the front to MC overline fenders for the clearance but not the rear.
I have trimmed the stock flares but not the tub at pinch point.
I think I'll start there.
I don't know my up travel. I'll need to check that and also look at bump stops and other options.
Like I said, normally I don't have much problem and only get a little rubbing occasionally. I'm more concerned for when the Jeep is fully loaded.
The flexible factory flares should not be considered a point of inference. They will move out of the way.
Metalcloak fenders only create about an inch of additional clearance over stock of you want to maintain the ability to steer with the tire stuffed.
A coil with a higher spring rate will sink less with changes in cargo load.
Some of us have installed load assist air bags to help with heavy cargo loads.
If you pay close attention to the required bump stop extension and maintaining that 4" of suspension up travel as a minimum, most other good considerations for the suspension will fall into place.
Yesterday I was looking at airbag man and Firestone bag options
