2005 Rubicon. New battery. Connections solid. Yesterday the radio would just turn off and turn back on as the odometer would flicker. No other symptoms. Checked the battery and the connections were tight. Today was driving home from grocery story and the same thing happened. Got home parked turned off the car, tried to restart and there was nothing. Think I could hear a click under dash. Tried to jump it just in case, but nothing. Tried a different key--nothing. Any suggestions as to where to go from here other than getting it towed to my mechanic.
That still sounds like a bad main power cable connection... could be where the battery ground attaches to the Jeep, could be a bad/weak engine ground, check all the connections on the heavy cables. Such cable connections can also look good from the outside but be corroded on the inside.
Yep a connection can be good enough to power low power devices like gauges and a radio but not good enough to pass the much heavier current the starter motor requires.
I agree with connection, the flickering dash is the giveaway. The main line at the fuse box would be my first suspect from this read. second suspect would be a bad ground somewhere.
Many thanks to all. You know when I was a kid in Idaho (ancient history) my buddies and I took a WWII surplus jeep apart and put it back together just because we could and it only took 2 short weeks. Now I shudder at even opening the hood of the Rubicon because I really do not have a clue where or what I am looking at.
