Something bad going on!

So I have this awful "skip bang bucking" going on in my TJ. I can't quite tell if it's rear diff or transfer case. It's more prevalent in 1st and 2nd gear but will do it in other gears as well. It gets better in 4wd but still there. I've been told maybe it's the chain in the transfer case jumping teeth or the spider gears in my stock Dana 35. Has anyone else had this problem and if so WHAT IS IT? Thanks for your help!

If your u-joints aren't the problem, I would pull the rear diff cover and check all the teeth. If you have never had the cover off, its probably due for a fluid change anyways. Some d35's come with a Trac-lok and when a disk breaks, it can make a mess in there.

Going to pull the diff cover tomorrow. I've had it off before and changed the fluid then too. It's not a Trac Loc though I would like it to be. I have to check my transfer case for model but so far everything I've read points to it being an NP231. I really hope it's diff and not t case. Oh and all my u joints are new also and I've checked those.

Mine was the transfer case. I pulled a lot of weight with it in four wheel drive and had similar symptoms. Not that hard to change. Plenty of new and rebuilt available out there.
