Stinking P0300 Code - 4,000+ RPM only

2004 TJ Unlimited (LJ), 4.0L, Automatic, 118,000 mi.

OK, so I went to pass someone the other day and hit 4,200 RPM and it felt like I was dragging a Semi behind me. Would not rev past 4,500 RPM then CEL started blinking and threw P0300, P0302, P0305 and went into limp mode.

Pulled over, turned it off, waited 2 minutes, turned it on, ran fine.

Runs fine putting around town, runs fine at part throttle on the highway.
Under load, and kicked down at 55+ mph, no power, spark knock

Full-throttle off idle to 4,800 RPM 1st gear to 2nd gear shift-point, only a slight spark knock between 4,600 - 4,800 RPM. No feeling of power loss.

I pulled the plugs - they were SHOT - #2 plug had eroded electrode and .080" gap. The rest of the plugs were eroded, but not as bad - .060"-.070" gaps

Changed plugs (Autolite copper), reset CEL codes - same thing, but this time threw P0300 only. With no cylinders listed.

Pulled the CMP sensor and it looked ok... Didn't change it though. The pulse ring looked ok, but I was able to move it side to side... just the ring, not the shaft(sliding back and forth when I wiggled it). Is this normal??

Reset the CEL again - P0300, and P0302 codes pop up

I didn't have too much time to look at anything else this weekend...

Also, I found blue marks from a paint pen on the coil, CMP, MAP sensor, IAV, TPS, and one on the fuel rail right at the #2 injector. It leads me to believe that this was going on in the past and that someone was marking all of the items that they had checked... Thoughts on that? Is this something dealership techs would do?

I've read lots of threads about this code, and have not found any that are high RPM, highway speed related.

I have only had this Jeep for 6 months and put about 5K miles on it.

Any ideas?

I can give you a quick solution, don't Rev up a old motor like that, it's just asking for trouble.

Front two cats were starting to disintegrate.
Replaced all three and has been running great ever since.

Old engine? 118k miles? So you are saying I should never allow my Wrangler to kick-down to a lower gear to pass then?

Not sure I understand all that. I have a TJ Unlimited with 200,000 miles on it. I drive it several times a week. There is never a time I drive it when I don't run the RPMs over 4000.

When is it supposed to blow up? Mind you, I'm not saying it won't, but I suspect if revs exceeding 4 grand were actually bad for it, it should have shown up before now.

IDK, I drive my tj like the 15yr old slow vehicle it is. If I'm going to be in a situation where I want to go fast or feel the need to pass people, I'll drive one of my other vehicles. Jeep gets slow rolled :-)

I have 166K on mine and it sees 4500 pretty often. If you have taken care of it it should not matter. If there is a failing part it's going to fail at 3000 RPM just as fast as it would at 4500. Those of us who drive our Jeeps every day we see 3K on the freeway all the time. Change the oil and keep up the maintenance you should be fine. If it goes then build something fun.

I'm not picking on you but how do you keep the motor running if you never clean it out? If I run mine around town to long and don't let it stretch its legs I can tell a difference in how it runs. If I run it on the freeway let it get good and warm and drive it like the tough Jeep it is then it runs better, starts better and makes me feel better.

Idk, I put around 7k miles on it a year & I've never seen the tach go over 3k that I can recall, It starts every time i turn the key and it runs just fine. Obviously, I don't DD it & if I had too I would sell it and buy something more suitable to be a DD.
I could DD a newer JK, though.

My wrangler is heavily used off-road and on, including hours of interstate use between trips. I never run mine over 3,000 because I personally feel there is no real reason. The engine takes more of a beating and they are low rpm high torque motors. Maje sure you have the proper gearing and you shouldn't have to do that. I had torebuild the motor a month after purchasing it from a driver who liked to do that very thing. I won't make the same mistake. 140k at time of rebuild.

Just like I didn't mention that the one I posted about has one on it.
