Strange noise in the fan area

I heard a kinda squealing knocking rubbing noise in the fan area. discovered it was the fan blades rubbing on the shroud at 6:00 position, I loosened the shroud, pushed it down alittle. had a friend hold it and watch while I cranked it back up. reved it, everything looked and sound good. shut it down, grabbed the fan assembly tried to move it around checking for possible bad bearings. But it seems pretty tight. we decided to drill a hole slightly above the Rt upr mount hole in the fan shroud, and temporarily adjust where the fan shroud sat. taking pressure off the fan blades. it ran fine, took it out for a test ride, it did fine until I got to some rough roads, then the fan blades started a light rubbing on the fan shroud again at the same 6:00 position.
Does anybody have any ideas?

Sound like the bearing in your water pump is starting to go. Mine started to rub at the most inoppertune time so I couldn't check it. About 10 min later I noticed a trail of steam behind me. At the next stop light I popped the hood and coolant was running free from underneath the pully for the water pump. Ends up the bearing in the pump housing completely self destructed so it wasn't holding the shaft completely straight, hence the fan baldes rubbing on the shroud.

Thanks for the reply, I was stumped. I was starting to think an engine mount might be broken. Did you have a shop fix it, or did you do it? And do you remember the cost?

What year is your Wrangler and how many miles on it? I may be replacing the radiator in the near future on my 2001 4.0 engine with 59,000 miles and was thinking maybe that would be the time for a new water pump. replacement.
