Thumping from rear end in 2wd

I just bought a 97 TJ. When I'm taking off from a start in 2wd the rear end bangs pretty violently. I noticed if I put it in 4hi it doesn't do it, only in 2wd anybody know what this could be?

Welcome to the forum. Take a look at your rear u-joints first. If that's not it, get the cover off the rear diff and have a look around. Worked on a 97 for a friend of a friend last summer doing the same thing. The carrier bearing on the left side of the carrier had failed and was allowing the carrier (and ring gear) to rack side to side. We had to install a new carrier but luckily his gears were still good. I suspect when you put it in 4 high, it is taking the load off the rear so whatever is wrong, the front is doing the work. Good luck with it.
