Here's the scoop guys. I bought my Jeep with a salvage title like some of others of you did. So, the VIN plate is GONE! The state or whom ever does it replaced the factory plate with a sticker on the drivers door jam. There is however a sticker on the firewall and one on the tailgate. That's all I can find for now. The numbers do match but not enough numbers for the VIN. Please tell me i'm not SOL to find out how it was set up from the factory. I would like to know things trans type, dif gears, etc. And anything else in the vin I should know.

The OEM driver's door jamb sticker has the complete VIN. Was that removed too?

The salvage title doesn't have the original VIN either?

If both the dashtop VIN plate and the door jamb sticker have been removed, how did they get a title at all? Sounds like perhaps a theft/chop shop job where they did not WANT the VIN to be found.

Is there a metal tag on the bottom of the grille (bottom, passenger side, between the grill and the front bumper)? That tag also contains the last 8 digits of the VIN (not sure which digits you are missing). With that, and little more info on your Wrangler (year, engine, etc), the VIN can likely be "reconstructed" and the original build info looked up.

Afaik, a salvage title keeps the vin number... removing it is not part of the salvage title process...

If you indeed HAVE the title it should have the vin on it.... If you don't actually have a title then you don't have a jeep but rather a full set of jeep parts.

Well yes I have a title. It says SALVAGE on it. The insurance co would only write for liability because of that. My oil pressure gauge went to 0 on the hiway one day after work. I pulled over, called a tow truck, the driver screen shot the door jam sticker and told me it was a salvage title. Uh, yeah I know. Then while in the comfort of my driveway I started it up. What do know, it says 40psi. Seems that it happens on Jeeps. But yes I have a SALVAGE title.

Ok, I'm not going to argue the point. I did a GOOGLE on it and son of a gun . . . whad'ya know . . . a youtube comes up about it. Well it did at the time. The guy on the vid had a cherokee that had the problem. Sorry I didn't mean ruffle any feathers. Seems someone else on here has had the same problem come as well. In fact one of the responders had commented about it. Oh well . . . sorry . . . it's gonna be a great day. Let us remember what it's for.

Happy Memorial Day all!

I'm did not intend ruffle feathers either. When people say "It's a Jeep thing" it normally means that it is a normal situation, like getting blown sideways in a stiff wind, or the constant small corrections in the steering when on the highway.

A sudden oil pressure drop to zero and then it coming back up, is something that should be investigated. I have has six different Jeeps (including an '89 XJ) and put many a mile on them. The XJ was traded off with over 90K miles and the TJ was purchased with 112K miles. None of the six have ever had that issue - at least not yet.

You mentioned that issue in passing in a thread about the VIN. There are a good number of very experienced members on this forum. It might be worth your while to post that issue in a thread of it's own and see what the consensus is. It may be the oil pressure sensor, but, that issue would certainly concern me. Which is why I said it is not a "Jeep thing".

He didn't SAY "it's a jeep thing", he said is seems to happen on jeeps and he's right... it does (as well as plenty of other vehicles).... most often it's the gauge sender but yes it needs investigated....
Happy jeeping

$40.00 oil pressure switch
It's all good now, but I come here to get answers to most all my maintenance questions.
Yes, there are many guys here with that kind of experience that so generously give away.
Thanks so much to those guys. That's not a resource to take for granite. I was merely commenting from my internet search that actually led me to this forum. So again, thanks to
all who helped me through my questions and task with their expertise.

That's real cute . . . got out the super mega industrial grade flashlight . . . nothing to see here . . . on both sides, seriously. I thought surely it would be there. You wouldn't have told us otherwise.

As for why I want to find the VIN #. Well, there's a lot of info in that #.
I went to the dealership where we have out Ram serviced and they got the printout from the series of numbers off of the sticker under the hood. I have 3.73 rear dif gear ratio not the 3.07. However I was surprised that it didn't tell me which series of transmission i have.

Why wouldn't one want to know the factory VIN# if his/her Jeep had a salvage title. Just me I guess. Anyway I got what I was looking for. Thanks for your help guys.
