Hi all. Today I decided to change the gear oil in my AX-15 in my 99. As soon as I took off the fill plug milky mocha colored oil came pouring out. Crap. So obviously water has gotten into the transmission and from the amount that came out of the fill plug a decent amount.
So my question is: Is there anything I can do, other then put more oil in and run it for a couple miles and drain it out hoping to get more water out? I picked up enough oil to change the oil out a few times in the hope that I can get all the water out.
After finding the oil in the transmission I assumed the previous owner had done some water forging and never changed the oil. I decided to change the fluid on the transfer case as well. The transfer case oil did not appear to have any water in it. It came out dark red(prob had never been changed lol).
What would cause the transmission to collect so much water? The Jeep had sat unused for a while by the previous owner(less then a year). The transmission casing was dry so I don't think there are any cracks or bad seals where water could have gotten in. Any ideas on what I should check to see how water made its way into the transmission?
I had a similar situation a few years back. While wheeling at Rausch Creek I drove into a water/mud hole that was a bit deeper than I thought. Long story short, I drained and refilled everyday for 2 weeks and was not able to save the transmission. Everytime I shifted from 1 to 2 it would grind a little. Eventually got worse and started grinfkng through other gears as well.
Hopefully you have better luck, keep flushing it with fresh oil.
Btw, check the boot where the shifter goes into the top of the transmission. Mine was ripped and I'm sure that's where the water got in. You'll have to give the tranny a reach around from underneath..
Just drain it good and refill it with a fresh GL-4 75W-90 like Redline MT-90. You can get Redline MT-90 at a discount from www.summitracing.com
OR, drain and refill it with a good synthetic 10W-30 motor oil which is essentially the same viscosity as a 75W-90 gear lube. Aisin, the manufacturer of your AX15, approved the use of a synthetic 10W-30 motor oil several years ago.
KBR97, not what I wanted to here lol. I do hope I have better luck as I'm on a tight budget(as in 0 money lol). Should I buy my tranny a few drinks before the reach around? I will have to check out the boot on my later today.
Jerry Bransford, I actually found a local shop that carries/can order me redline oils and just picked up 4 quarts of MTL. However, that shit is expensive! lol. So I picked up some cheap ass 10w-30 that I put it and ran for about 25 miles. I just drained it again, the oil still had water in it but not nearly as bad looking as when I originally drained it.
VSOmedic, Once I get more cash flow I plan on doing the diffs too.
Just a update on this issue for anyone stumbling across this thread. I had a fair amount of water in the transmission and no idea how long it had been there.
I bought some of the cheapest 10w-40 oil I could find(walmart brand). I'd drain and refill with the cheapo oil and drive maybe 50-200miles and then repeat the process. After doing this maybe 4-5 times the oil was coming out just as clear as when it went in.
After the last transmission oil change I filled it up with some redline mtl and the transmission has been shifting great. It's been a few months and I have had no additional issues. Perhaps I just got lucky or my transmission is a ticking timebomb lol.
Had a similar situation on a Triumph TR6 4 speed trans after Hurricane Sandy which wound up full of salt water. I opened the fill and drain plugs and emptied a large can of WD 40 into the trans using the tube to direct the spray all over. I let it drain as it was being sprayed in. Then I took the compressed air nozzle and blew everything out and refilled with new Redline. Almost 2 years later there have been no issues.
