water pump was leaking..

2000 4.0, as I was driving home Friday I started smelling coolant, first thoughts was Oh Hell what's messed up now.. so I get home, cut it off and Yep I have coolant leaking pretty good off the front of the motor. Typical waterpump.. I think.. so I lay down under the Jeep and take a closer look to try to pinpoint the exact location of the leak.. can't see nothing.. I run inside to grab my flashlight and come back out and the leak has stopped. I crank it and let it idle for about 20 minutes and still nothing. So yesterday I buy a new water pump and thermostat and gasket preparing to change it this morning.. I crank it up, let it warm up, drive it about 4 miles and still no more leak.. what the Hell??

Not surprising that the leak is intermittent for the time being. But if it's leaking from the waterpump's weep hole, which you can't see when it's mounted, it's only a matter of time before it starts making noise & ultimately fails.

If you bought your water pump from a store like Autozone, I'd return it for a refund & get a Mopar pump from either the dealer (who will usually discount it if you ask/push), or from a discounted online source like WeRMopar.com - OEM Parts For Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram Vehicles

In my strongest possible opinion, the water pumps sold by stores like Autozone are junk... despite their lifetime warranty which more typically means a lifetime of grief replacing them from premature failures. Your OE Mopar water pump lasted 14 years, not bad.

I've seen more than a few leaking water pumps that were intermittent. Just know, it won't get better.

So far as non-OE aftermarket replacements of critical parts like water pumps, pretty much.

I had a slight leak a few months ago, bought the hoses, water pump, T stat and Antifreeze. Then nothing. Fast forward to last Tuesday and whamo full on leak.

I just finished doing a:
valve cover gasket
both CCV valves and new tubes (rear tube from dealership 48.00, I made a front one for cheap)
water pump, T Stat, and brand new radiator....

I rolled the dice with the Napa water pump cause of the price of the one from the dealership. I figure I could replace a lot of water pumps for the price of the dealer....

don't forget to get new fan studs and water pump inlet tube that goes from the water pump to the heater core.

I dunno about you but my time is worth more than the price difference between them... not to mention replacing a water pump again is not my idea of a fun way of spending a Saturday morning.

I normally agree with you Jerry but local (4 dealers were within 3 bucks each) wanted close to 300.00 bucks and was back ordered for one, I got Napa for 38.00 ish. Can't remember for sure.

Bet if this one fails in a year I will pony up and buy OEM for sure.

You were quoted $300 for a Mopar water pump? What?

I paid $132 for my Mopar water pump last year at my local Jeep dealer (pushed him a little for a discount) but they're only $113.72 at WATER PUMP for 2004 Jeep Wrangler who says the list price for the Mopar pump is only $162.

I'm on graveyard this weekend, but if you need a hand I can help after I wake up...

Its really not that bad, I was doing mine by myself and watching my extremely active 4 yr old at the same time, + I did some extra stuff.... So it took me a little longer.

breaking the darn rear CCV valve and rear tube really took a lot of time. (I knew I shoulda waited till the next oil change for it) I ended up pulling the valve cover to get it out so that meant 40.00 for a gasket and 48.00 for the tube. I already had the CCV valve and grommet.

Dang it took a lot of time to get that stuck broken piece off.
