What is this ground wire for

98 wrangler tj 4.0 carefully pulled the HVAC controls foward and this was just sitting on top of them, everything seems to work so I have no idea, any help?

Is there a ground (an OEM ground) coming from your radio?
IIRC that's where my OEM radio ground terminated (2000 TJ).

I'll have to check on that, would the radio still work if it wasn't grounded?

no it needs ground to turn on

if that was the ground for oem radio, its just extraneous now

Right, so if you have an aftermarket radio it may be grounded somewhere else by the installer, making that ground redundant.

That ground strap is for the radio and even though the radio is obviously picking up a ground via other wiring, it's still a good idea to attach the ground strap to the ground lug on the back of the radio. It helps with RF shielding reasons which is why the radio has its ground lug bolt on the back of the radio.

Good point, I really meant 'redundant by the installer'. However, I do not recall a grounding lug on my Sony, yet I also do not recall leaving that strap undone...

I still have the factory radio, so I'll pull it out and see if I can attach it to the ground lug
