What the heck is this???

On my 99 TJ 4.0 - I've got this "extra" hose that I found while replacing the thermostat. It was tucked in near the radiator and is capped off with a piece of plastic. This was NOT done at the factory! I traced it back and found that it goes to the back, upper left side of the front axle differential.

Any ideas what this is and why it's just hanging there? Common sense would say it supposed to be connected!

Here's a pick of the loose end and where it goes into the diff

Sounds like a breather hose so you don't get water in the diff

It should have one from the factory.

Yep, it was done at the factory. Mine is in the same place, I just saw it day before yesterday when I was changing my radiator and t-stat. Mine has a different cap on it though. FWIW. Also, it should have an adel clamp holding it upright secured with the top radiator bolt on that side.
