Wiring LED side-markers

I'm going to be installing some flat fenders soon, so with that comes re-locating my side markers. I already know i'm going to have a small LED under the fender, however LEDs confuse me to a certain extent.

I have a couple of these small 3/4 LEDs, however i want them to function completely as the old bulbs did. And i understand that LEDs behave slightly different than incandescent bulbs, but i'm not exactly sure why and how. From Google i'm able to pull some bits and pieces about needing to use diodes, the LEDs only working as side markers and not blinkers, etc etc. but it's still unclear. Anyone have a write-up or anything of the sort?

It is not possible for the LEDs to operate exactly the same as the incandescent marker lights, at least not with out a lot of rewiring. The marker lights operate on a floating ground, which means current switches directions depending on the function. Diodes (LEDs being a type of diode) are one way voltage gates, which means current can flow one way but not the other. This is why LEDs will not function properly when wired to the marker lights.

You have to wire them to the regular turn signal circuit. For the small 3/4" single intensity LEDs you can perform a 2-3 wire conversion so you get running lights and turn signal, otherwise you only get one of those.

Most people choose to install larger 4" type dual intensity turn signal lights in the grill (like the JK) and smaller 3/4" lights as markers.

Thanks, it actually makes more sense now. Though I'd like to try and actually wire the markers into my actual turn signal circuit so they can function as both. Anyone have a write up detailing this?

If you want to do a simple resistor/diode mod, you can have both side markers and turn signals operate from your two wire leds for <about $10. Here's the parts you need and how to wire it up. I housed the ones I made in little pieces of plastic tubing to protect them...just make sure you insulate your connections from each other.

Jeep LED Front Marker/Turn Signal Light Modification Parts List

Radio Shack Numbers (quantity enough for two harnesses)

4 Rectifier Diodes #IN4004
2 560 Ohm ˝ watt Resistors #271-1116
3 Colors 18 gauge wire
Solder
Heat shrink

Waterdog is completely correct. I have the same set up and it works great.

Thanks! I also found a write-up for wiring LED turn signals into the front. It's basically the same, i'll just need to Y off of the existing turn signal wires and play with some diodes and resistors.
