Unhappy wrangler shutting off...help!

so i was driving home tonight on the freeway (60-70mph), and then out of nowhere, it just shuts off. the radio and lights still work, but all my gauges drop, cannot accelerate, and seems that my power steering seizes up because trying to get onto the shoulder was tough. if i try and turn it on, it will just crank and not start. again, all my lights and radio works, but no gauges. i just recently put in new spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor, spark plug wires, and brand new battery (optima). also, no check engine light came on. any help is appreciated!

Try cranking it with the headlights ON. If they dim or go out, look for a loose or bad connection on the battery cable -- either one.

If they don't, look at the power wire where it goes into the underhood fuse box.

It's no wonder the country is falling apart - stupidity abounds!

First, I would try to exchange the Optima battery. They're known to have problems with a lot of cars (including Wranglers and Fords) cranking systems. If it's not a loose connection, it may possibly be a faulty alternator. Go to AutoZone and have them run a free test. Make sure they run both the battery and alt. test under load. Check your spark plugs, they've been known to give problems.

Are you belts still intact? I remember my aunts old cutlass shit a timing belt and wouldn't run but electric stuff worked. The wires are still making good contact to the plugs and cap right? Since you just changed those might want to triple check those connections.
