91 wiper question

When I picked up my 91 YJ the PO mumbled something about the wipers not working and a green wire. I dont see anything butchered up, however they do not return to the bottom once shut off. They stop wherever they are when the switch is turned off. Not a huge deal but it would be nice to have them operate normally. Any guesses?

Most likely you need to replace your wiper motor...

The wiper motor gets two positives and a negative...
One pos is switched and the other is constant... the constant pos powers the motor to self park.

Find a post by Got it at last. In his signature there's a free link to several Factory Service manuals and a couple Factory Parts Manuals.
Open that link and click on the manual that you need. The schematics are in the electrical troubleshooting section.

Do you have intermittent wipers?

Good Luck, L.M.

No intermittent wipers....or at least I assume they would stay running if I needed them Just regular 2 speed jobbers. When I got it the wiper motor had 1 screw holding it in place and would make all kinds of racket when turned on. Wish I looked better to see what wires were hooked up. None the less, I'll have a look at the schematics and go from there. Thanks LM.

The plug that runs to the wiper motor is accessible if you pull the speedo bezel and the tach. Before I bought a wiper motor, I'd open the plug and check the signal from the turn signal/wiper switch.

Alternatively, you can remove the drivers seat and lay a moving blanket on the floor if you're doing a lot of work under the dash. I don't bend like I used to, so laying on my back with my feet where my rear seat used to be makes working under the dash doable for me.

If you find that you need a wiper motor, I suggest buying the wiper linkage for installation at the same time as the motor. If the linkage isn't available, perhaps you can locate the plastic cups that snap over the balls on the linkage ends. That's what usually fails.

Good Luck, L.M.
