Chevy 350 in 93 yj

Hey guys,

I have purchased my first Jeep ever. It is a 1993 yj S. When I bought it the tub was off of the frame and the 2.5L motor was long gone. I have pieced it back together over the last couple of months and its about that time for a motor. About the same time I bought the Jeep i bought a 1988 Chevy short bus for $300 just because, well it was $300. I took it to a friend of my father in law to get it running, which he did. long story short I decided to take the 350 out of the bus and put it in the yj. the 350 is fuel injected and needs a trans, because the one in the bus is an automatic and I want a manual and my jeep is set up for a manual.

so basically I want to put the 350 in the jeep with some sort of manual trans (suggestions would be greatly appreciated), put a 4 inch rough country lift, do away with the 2 inch body lift and run some 35s after i get flat top front fenders and cut out the rear fenders. I also am working on a deal to get a set of dana 44s to put under it.

Please if you have any advice or suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

I plan to drive this on the road so I would like the gauges to work as well if anyone knows how to do that.

AX15 and an adapter to the SBC 350.

712567V : Chevy V8 & V6 to Jeep Wrangler AX15, adapter bellhousing kit. | Advance Adapters

You can get an AX15 from 6 cyl YJs, except 87 I think. XJ/TJ transmissions may work. Up until around 94/95, YJs had internal slave cylinders. Find one with an external slave, or look into a "mod" for an external.

I had no idea 94/95 AX15 bell housings were worth anything when i swapped my NV4500 in. I scrapped the tranny bell housing and all.

Those are good but they are huge... the 3500 is the same size as the stock 3550 or ax15

How do you plan to use the jeep? Daily driver, crawler, Play in mud? You will need to take this into consideration?

You said {put a 4 inch rough country lift, do away with the 2 inch body lift}, I agree with taking out the body lift But I don't like the R/C lift kit just from what i've read on here.

You asked about gauges.
The temp and oil pressure should be no problem. Simply use the original Jeep sending units with an adapter to fit the Chevy block. (At least this will work on 1990 & earlier YJs).
Use an early Jeep alternator (1987-1990, perhaps earlier) and an early Jeep 1987-1990) ammeter. The early Jeep alternator is a Delco (Internal regulator) so it should bolt right up to early Chevy brackets.
Naturally, the gas gauge and clock don't care what engine you have.

You'll probably have to check out a '87-'90 Factory Service Manual for the wiring schematic for the charging system. The brown wire is a resistance wire and you may not be able to shut the engine off without it. Some folks report having to use a diode to be able to shut the engine off.
You'll probably need a 1993 FSM to see what wires are unnecessary if you install a SBC.

Good Luck, L.M.

@jeeptank91 I plan to use it mostly for a mild trail rig but also want it to be able to put around the lake on the weekends that I don't go wheeling.

I don't know where on okla. you are located but I found this Craigslist ad. If you decided to go with the AX15 you could pull it out of this truck and use the transfer case. ( that way you wont have to pull yours apart to change the input shaft to 23 spline). You could probably sell the rest of the truck and make your money back. then all you would need is the. Bell housing adapter
( If its a 4x4) The AX-15 was phased in to replace the Peugeot BA-10/5 five-speed that had been used from 1987 until mid-1989...
