Need guidance on engine upgrade...

Looking for some advice - I just had a small engine fire in my jeep this week and insurance has already totalled it out... I get to keep it (wanted to) and am now thinking this is a great time to pop in a 4.0 instead of the 4.2. Another alternative is to bring it home and part it out, scrap it and get another one. I am emotionally invested in this as it the same model/color as my first jeep so I am inclined to use the insurance money and rebuild her with used parts.

Thoughts??

The wiring harness was hosed and that was the initial expense quoted by the dealer to fix it, but they are saying the engine may also be shot so that is the reason for thinking about just doing it all now. This will be done by a mechanic as i would have no clue how to do this.

First pics.... most likely the engine itself is ok if the body isn't destroyed....

Cost to pay someone to to custom work may well exceed the value of the jeep....

If harness is toast great time to switch to 4.0 efi control even if keeping old engine

Lots of work but nothing real difficult and lots of no good xj to grab parts from

Honestly switching from a 4.2 to a 4.0 isn’t a huge upgrade. You can just swap a 4.0 head, intake, FI, harness, etc onto a 4.2 to gain power & FI.
But if I were going to the trouble of an engine swap, I’d just go ham & swap in a v8. Tons of options- Ford, Chevy, mopar, amc & more.

Just an update - found an intact 94 Cherokee to donate to my beloved YJ. I am going to have the mechanic swap the engine and tranny into mine, should I consider doing the rear axle as well since I have it? I understand that they later models may be better than what I have...

Nope unless a rare xj with d44 and gear ratio matters

If you are swapping an xj auto tranny you will need TCM and wiring plus driveshaft length change

Will need to reclock tyranny to tc holes

Alcoa if the xj has a 242 transfer case you may want to use that to gain a extra transfer case selection with 4 full time

Thanks - I will have them look into it.. the whole XJ was intact, so we should be able to cannibalize what ever we need! since my harness was toast, he suggested I get a whole vehicle as a donor.

What are you being quoted for the swap? Be careful here. Its going to take some hours, especially if your mechanic is gutting the donor.

I was quoted around 15-0 for full swap of engine, tranny and fuel tank.

How much is "15-0"?

I would go with a stroker 6 with Edelbrock alu head. and a Holley self tuning fuel injection. With the self tuning fuel injection you don't need to worry about factory ECM or factory wiring.

Sorry...1500 for complete swap from Cherokee... not sure if this will cover brake booster swap or not.
