Make sure the vac line is plugged into the intake manifold. That vac line controls the 4wd light and the vac disconnect.

If the engine isn't running there will
be no vacuum to engage the front.
Got it at last likes this.

It may be as simple as some have suggested could also be a broken chain in the t-case. If the CAD doesn't engage the passenger side shaft The driver-side shaft would still lock in with the t-case in 4wd and the drive-line would turn the driver-side wheel by hand if I'm not mistaken.

That's an easy fix pick up a rebuild kit for around $250 and have at it.

https://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/...s/np-231-parts

Or buy a used T-case for around $300 You will need a 21 spline for a 4cyl or a 23 spline for a 6cyl

Every time you engage 4H or 4L you will lock the T-Case and the chain will drive the front yoke. If you can spin the yoke by hand in 4H or 4L, there is something broken in the T-Case. Most likely the chain.

Sorry to say there is no amount of money that could entice me to go to the Garden state.

Yes you are correct

Yes, If you have a 6cyl you'll need a 23 spline T-case

A chain is $80.00-$100.00 plus you'll probably find a few worn doo-dads that will require replacing if you elect to repair your current TC..
A used TC may or may not have those same worn doo-dads.

I hear a S-10 transfer case is internally just like a NP231 HD. All the guts are the same as a heavy duty Jeep TC, it's just that the Chevrolet case is different from the Jeep case. You should confirm this with someone that actually knows before buying a S-10 TC. I think a S-10 TC might be pretty cheap if you can find one in your local Pick & Pay.
A Cherokee TC can work but you need to drill the back of your transmission. It's called clocking and there's a jig available to do it precisely.

Wrecked Wranglers are kinda rare in the salvage yards because a lot of wrecks end up as trail rigs or parted out by the owner.
Wrecked or rusted Cherokees are more plentiful than Wranglers. I'd expect to find a lot more S-10s in any salvage yard than Wranglers.

Good Luck, L.M.

When you are looking at used cases - the AX-5 was on the 4 cyl, the AX-15 was used on 6 cyl 4.0L YJs and early 6 cyl TJs.

XJ is a Cherokee as LM said it will need to be clocked and the S 10 t-case you will have to transfer all the parts out of it into your case. As LM said check it out with someone that has done the S 10 t case to the YJ case

Don't know exactly where you live but, there are five 23 spline T-cases within 100 miles of Trenton. http://www.car-part.com/

Craigslist, eBay and Facebook Marketplace are also places to look

You could call these folks

XJ is an '84-'01 Cherokee. There are a lot of drive train and suspension commonalities and similarities between the YJ and XJ and then more between the XJ and TJ. For example the XJ got the 4.0L in 1989 (I owned one purchased new, loved it) and the YJ of course got it in 1991 (I owned one of them, also purchased new). TJ owners can replace the front drag link/tie rod with a set for the XJ. They are the same size and beefier.

As far as I know the NP231J for the 4.0 is the same from the XJ through the YJ and TJ.

Similar but not the same... XJ case needs to clocked for the YJ skid plate clearance. TJ case needs the vacuum switch added for the CAD to work (not a big deal).

My light bulb just lit!
It's actually the rear of the transmission that needs to be clocked. Here's a pic of my jig on the end of an AX15, getting ready to mark and drill the trans.
When we say the TC needs to be clocked, we actually mean the transmission needs to be drilled.
It might be easier or cheaper to find a Cherokee (XJ) transfer case rather than a Wrangler (YJ) transfer case.
IIRC, the jig is around $40.00. The jig I have is the simplest to use and luckily, it's also the least expensive that I found.

You bolt the jig to the transmission and use the little holes on either side of the large holes to mark where you want to drill. Either 15* up or 15* down.
Another poster made a second jig to hold the drill bit straight while drilling. I haven't used my jig since I saw his jig, so I don't have a pic of the second jig. If he sees this thread, perhaps he'll post a pic of his jig.

Good Luck, L.M.

The inside of the np231 is so simplistic even a caveman could do it, (sorry Geico), YouTube it first and split 'er open, If it's just the chain, it's something you can do in an hour or two. find yourself a 10mm 12pt socket before you start. there's one bolt at the top of the case you'll need that for.If it's the chain. fix it, if it's more than that source another working t-case. JMHO..
