stock air box delete

most all of the emissions are gone from my jeep, so i'm wanting to delete the stock ugly intake, and run an open air filter directly on top of the carb. i've read some that it takes an adapter plate to be able to attach one directly to the carb. i was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction to get a filter housing and an adapter if needed?

thanks

The stock filter is far superior to an open element.

I'm currently researching something similar, for similar reasons, potentially to put on a CAI as well as just make things look a bit better under the hood. I don't know that I can be of much help to you though. I've got the 2.5TBI. Maybe check out Holley for an adaptor plate, and then your air filter manufacturer of choice for filter and housing.

Are you in the US? Can't imagine a vehicle passing inspection with all of the emissions removed, atleast in our parts

LOL. You need to get out more. I wouldn't live anywhere that the government had to approve my vehicle.

Your stock air cleaner functions like a Cold Air Intake if it has the tube from the snout of the air cleaner assembly to the grill panel.
I have all the emissions plumbing and sensors removed from my motor and have screwed the internal flapper inside the air cleaner pickup tube (snout) open.

Not everything in life is pretty. In the extremely remote instance that you might have an ugly kid, would you make him walk around with a bag over his head?
I grumble every time I have to remove and reinstall my ugly, clunky two piece air cleaner, but I haven't been able to come up with a practical improvement.

Good Luck, L.M.

I actually want to get rid of the cold air. PO didnt have the original when I asked when I bought it. I think it just looks out of place. I have moved it around but no matter what, just dont look right. Not a priority right now, but Ill Get to it one day.

^ while commonly CALLED a cold air intake, that feeds the engine hot, poorly filtered air... I don't blame you for wanting to ditch it... luckily the world is filled w people who think it's a good thing and would happily trade you a stock system for it.... advertise it on cl and fb as 'will trade for stock'

mine doesn't have the snout taking the air intake all the way from the grill. all i have is the 2 piece air box that ends in the middle of no mans land.

It is resting on the fender with a temp hose clamp secured to the brace rod. Not going to make a proper bracket since I plan on getting rid of it. GF, you are correct, no where under the hood is cold. Unless you drop it low and then just suck up moisture or mud.

It connects to a flange on the core support

GF, I am not sure how it should connect. The original air filter housing support is gone on mine. So to replace I need the housing and bracket too.

Are the filter housing and brackets the same on a 2.5 and 4.0?

Bo Harris, Find a post by Got it at last. In his signature there's a free link to several Factory Service manuals and a couple Factory Parts Manuals.
Open that link and click on the manual that you need.
I think he has a parts manual for 1987-1990 YJs. It will have an exploded view of the air cleaner setup for carbureted and FI YJs. Look on page 14-500.
You'll probably have to find the bracket that fits onto the valve cover in a salvage yard.

Good Luck, L.M.

Yes, you have a 4.0, so the fender bracket is the same as is the air box. There are plenty on Ebay for not much $$. Stock air box would be MUCH better imho.

Thanks. I have a guy that wants to swap but he has a 95 2.5. Was not sure if the length of the hose would be different. From pics I have seen the throat of the throttle body looked to be in the same position on both.

Thanks LM. I have all his manuals downloaded but I didn’t think to look. DUH! It is plain as day they do fit.

So....as Roseanne Anna Danna once said. Never mind.

Just realized you have a newer jeep.... yours doesn't use that hose... tyat's for early jeeps w round metal air cleaners on top of the engine....
Your style has a plastic air cleaner on the inner fender w a plastic pipe to the throttle body

In post #1, OP (20streetrod06) states "and run an open air filter directly on top of the carb". I assumed he has a 4.2.

Bo Harris has a '95 4.0. Seems to have caused some confusion in this thread.
Similar beasts but different. Kinda like a dog vs. wolf.

Good Luck, L.M.
