1972 cj5 cam help!!! PLEASE

Have a 72 with a 304amc. Has .305 cam. I'm going to .477 with new lifters and valve springs. Any suggestions?

What compression are you running?

Keep in mind that when upgrading your cam, you need to have the cam match or be compatible with your compression ratio. If you have say 7.6:1 CR and add a cam with too much lift and duration, you might not be able to build enough cylinder pressure and the motor will actually run worse. Also any work done to the heads? Will they flow enough to support your higher lift cam? How about the fuel system? New 4bbl carb or a stock 2bbl? Any ignition upgrades?

Just stabbing in a cam without a supporting cast can actually hurt your motor's performance. Believe it or not it's very easy to over-cam your motor.

I have no Idea on what my compression ratio is. And no head work done. All I wanted was cams lifters and springs just to give it a little lope and just a little bit better performance. Nothing to crazy. Always been about body work not very familiar with the guys of a motor, that's why I posted. Of you can give me any info I'd greatly appreciate it.

Your engine already has more power than you can put to the ground unless there is something wrong with it. if you install a high lift cam with more overlap and longer duration just to get a "lope" big mistake you will kill your low RPM performance and low end is where you want it in a jeep. so unless you are building a "Drag Racer I would leave it alone

bubbabud is dead on. If you have to make a change go mild.

I run a AMC 360 in my YJ. It has a Summit 8600 cam and has good power at lower RPM. Its about as much as you can run without higher compression.
