4.2L engine replacement

Just wondering what the most cost effective engine replacement is? I would like to have fuel injection as opposed to carb. Does anyone have experience with the Stroker 4.6L? I am not able to do the work myself so I will need to find a shop to do the work. Any replacement advice is appreciated.

when i was shopping around for a cj, i noticed a lot of guys replacing the 4.2L with the 4.0L, granted you'd have to most likely find a donor. it seems in my area, if the 4.2L wasn't rebuilt it was swapped for a 4.0L.

no problem. my understanding is the 4.0 is basically the EFI version of the 4.2 but I have no idea if it's "plug and play". good luck with whatever you do and I'd love to hear some follow up once it's done.

I have a friend that runs a local Off Road shop and has problems with the stroker motors running hot . to the point where he warns customers before they buy them !

I'm kinda in the same boat.. my 4.2L doesn't run, trying to decide if I wanna rebuild it, or look for another 4.2L or go the swap in a 4.0L route..

I just finished this process over the winter. The original 4.2 was very tired. I had my auto guy research many different options, all on the side of saving money. We looked at the newer 4.0l engine but my CJ has the 4 speed manual transmission. The 4.0 is not plug and play with certain CJ tranny's. I ended up getting a remanufactured 4.2L, an exact swap for my tired one. EFI was going to cost around $1400 installed, so I had my guy just put a Holly carb as a replacement for the OEM carb. I also went with an Offenhauser aluminum intake.

I'me very please with the finished product. Even when cold, the engine starts right up. I think parts & labor the job came out to $5200.00

I also had the clutch replaced, new exhaust, new motor mounts, and the guy replaced all 11 body mount bushings.

Engine has a 3yr 100,000 mile warranty on it as well.

I think thats the only bad thing about my 4.2 is the fact that its carb'ed but then again it won't be a daily driver when its done. I just need to weigh my options when it comes time..

Also wanted to mention that if you are looking for someone to do the work, most people these days will steer you towards replacing the engine. Many people don't do rebuilds anymore, unless you find some old crusty guy that just loves to do stuff like that.

My mechanic said he would rebuild if that was the route I wanted to take, but the cost was going to be $800.00 more than a replacement engine, and the warranty would only be 1000 miles vise 100,000 miles.

Thats just my experience with it.

I also had the right guy do the job as he raced cars in the 70's and 80's and his car was an AMC with the 258 4.2L engine. He knew where my engine was leaking before I knew. If your in the Baltimore MD area, I can put you in contact with him.

I would be doing all my own work, because I'm cheap and don't trust other people with my junk lol

I'm not to mechanically inclined to rebuild my own engine, plus if I was, it would have been dis-assembled on my work bench for 3 years before it was completed.

My mechanic doesn't do internet. LOL, I know what your thinking... I probably had the same thoughts. I can talk to him if you really want to know and get you a company name and number. I know the block came from a place in Jersey, but they have west coast warehouses also. If you take that route, have your block ready to go, because the driver that drops off the new block will take your old block and give you money back. I think I got $350-$400 back for giving up my worn block.

I don't put things off, I'm ADHD, so I lose interest in jobs that take longer than 8 hours. I really gotta focus on the task at hand. If I don't feel like it, then a task can sit open for months before I come back to it.

It's just easier for me to shell out the money for someone else to do the job because I know the job will be completed.

Life deals you cards, so you have to learn how to play them correctly.

I put the Howell tbi on my 1982 CJ-7 3 years ago and am very happy with the way it runs . i dont think that the 4.0 shares the same bell housing pattern so to change to the 4.0 might require adapters and maybe drive line mods shorten rear / lengthen front . i am very pro Howell and it's not that hard to install and even smog legal !!
