82 scrambler

hi I have a scrambler with a very small 4 cylinder that has vapor coming out of the valve cover breather and the egr valve
147000 miles
Im sure its tired and needs to be replaced or at least rebuilt
it also looks like there is oil in to air cleaner pan.
can I do any work with the motor in the jeep as I do not have any way to remove motor?
let me know

Some vapor is normal. With your mileage there could be excess blow by. I would check compression and see what the condition of your engine is. If the compression is good and you are not soaking your air filter with oil you could keep on going with it as it is.
The solution would be to at the very least hone the cylinders and replace rings. Some engines can be done in the vehicle but for a 4 cyl engine in a vehicle held together by a half dozen or so bolts I would remove it.
check out tool rental companies for the lift to pull the engine and pick up a cheap engine stand from harbor freight or auto parts store. If you don't have a garage, Just explain to the wife that the kitchen floor is easy to clean so its the best place to do the rebuild.
