84 CJ here... Pretty sure I have power brakes that aren't hooked up

Hello all,

So I've been looking into getting the proper breather assembly as the CJ I picked up has an aftermarket one, doesn't have a hookup for the PCV vac line, and it's just venting into the engine bay making the cab smell like exhaust. My brake booster is large and round which leads me to believe I have power brakes, however, the vacuum doesn't appear to be hooked up. If the vacuum line is disconnected, does that mean I'll have manual brakes? The brakes work just not very well. I ask because I want to get the correct breather assembly as I've read there are two different kinds, one for power brakes, one for manual.

You should have manifold vacuum running straight to your booster. The hose should come from the base of the carburetor or below. If not hooked up correctly, you'll have to push REALLY hard on the pedal to get the thing to stop.

yes. this is exactly it. you really have to get on the brakes to get this thing to stop. the PO put an after market carb on it so who knows if that even has the port for the vacuum line connection. here's a pic of the carb. do you think maybe this bottom connector should run to the booster? note the pic is rotated 90 degrees counter clockwise.

Put your finger over that fitting while the engine is running: it should suck REALLY hard if its manifold vacuum, and the engine probably won't idle with a manifold vacuum port that large open (so I doubt if that's a manifold vacuum port).

The correct port should be located somewhere below the throttle plate, (either on the carb base or the intake manifold itself) and be about the size
of the port pictured. There should be a hose running from that port to a similar plastic port on the booster. There may be a pipe plug in the correct port if the engine or manifold came off of a car with no power brakes (unlikely in a vehicle from the '80s, unless the engine has been changed).

What engine do you have? If its a 258 six, I can take a picture of the hookup on my 1981 and post it for you.
