84 CJ7 Tranny problems

Hi all. Looking for some ideas here because I'm having some tranny issues off-road. No problems on the highway but off-road my transmission will not stay in 2nd gear when I let up on the gas, and sounds like a hammer banging around inside. It's an '84, with original 4.2 Liter and I'm assuming the original transmission (5 speed) also. I've been told that because of the 3" lift, the drive shaft is not aligning properly. Some other guys say I should put a short throw in in it, and others say it's shot and needs to be replaced. Any ideas?

Sounds like your synchronizer is worn out and your transmission might be missing a few teeth. Personally, I would not put much if any money into a T5. I would rather swap in something a little more sturdy, like an AX15.
